about us
Every great work of art had a modest beginning, and Kalamandir's is no exception. The story is interwoven with themes of wisdom, fortitude, and a profound comprehension of the enduring connection between a woman and her saree.
The voyage of our founder, Kanaka Durga Prasad, started in the far-off country of America rather than the well-known Bharat. He dealt in the saree, the fabric that symbolises our past, there, in the middle of a strange culture. The foundation for Kalamandir was laid during this period in what appeared to be a routine transaction.
One day, a distinguished couple graced his small store in the USA. The woman picked out five beautiful sarees, with an acute sense of tradition in her eyes. The total came to $2500. As he made the payment, the husband chuckled and said, “You always find a reason to buy more — occasion or not.” It was meant in jest, but it struck the wrong chord. In a moment that spoke volumes, she cast aside the saree bags and walked away
As dusk fell and the store was about to close, the same gentleman returned, his demeanor humbled. "Please," he implored, his voice tinged with urgency, "Give me all five sarees. I'm afraid if I’m Safe if I'll be going home without them.”
Our founder saw something significant at that moment. He came to see that a saree was more than just a piece of clothing; it was a source of great significance in a woman's life, an expression of emotion, and a gesture of respect. He was aware of the innate need, the unsaid aspirations that every woman harboured for this treasured item of clothing.
He returned to India with a vision in addition to memories, this newfound insight engraved in his soul. The first Kalamandir store was opened in 2005 with a small investment of ₹1,00,000, which was his wife's savings and evidence of her faith. It was a modest start, driven by the profound realisation gained from that experience in America.
From that single store, rooted in the principle of understanding a woman's deepest desires, Kalamandir has blossomed into a name synonymous with exquisite ethnic wear. Today, we stand proudly with over 6,000 dedicated employees and sprawling across a lakh square feet of storage, 68 stores in total with a testament to the unwavering trust our customers have placed in us.
